Objectives of Rashtriya Gokul Gram Mission

  • Development, conservation, and promotion of indigenous breeds
  • To initiate a breed improvement program for indigenous cattle breeds so that genetic improvement and increase in the number of animals can be done.
  • Taking measures to increase milk production and productivity keeping in view the economic interests of farmers and livestock farmers.
  • There is a large number of non-descript breeds of cows in the country.

Non-descript cows will be developed using high quality breeds like Gir, Sahiwal, Rathi, Deuni, Tharparkar, Red Sindhi etc. to overcome the breed problems of Indian cows. This will be done through quality artificial insemination.

  • Distribution of bulls with high genetic merit for natural services.

Through Gokul Gram Yojana, not only animal husbandry will be promoted but training will be given to use scientific method to improve the quality of milk products and non-descript breeds of cows will be improved.

PM Daksh Yojana Registration 2024

  • The higher breeds of Indian cows like Gir, Sindhi, Sahiwal and Rathi are on the verge of extinction.
  • Most of the breeds give less milk. That’s why those breeds are not popular.
  • Most of the farmers have turned to HF or Jersey cows due to non-availability of high milk yielding high breed Indian cows.
  • Most of the Indian breed cows are aggressive in nature. Bullying of humans, fighting with each other etc. is common. During milking, one leg of the cow has to be tied several times to avoid kicking.
  • These breeds also like freedom. Due to paucity of grazing land and lack of people to look after them, farmers and livestock keepers find it difficult to keep them.

These are the reasons why the Indian breed of cow is unpleasant.

selection of villages
